Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hello Alan,
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hi to both of you,
If you think you have problems, I am sitting here at 1:30AM doing the same thing. Trying to get my bank from "Union Dime Savings Bank in New York City" open. I found your requests looking up the same, Automatic Recording Safe Co. My bank is in a box with a marron cover and red bottom. THERE IS A KEY. A little flat silver key with only on piece on the end that gets inserted. It doesn't seem to fit right, it appears that the key should have two piesces on the end with a space in the middle to fit properly. The key does turn it when inserted into one side of the lock. But nothing is happening. It appears that only the bottom of the bank will open when and if I get this key to work. I will keep trying and I will let you know what happens. If it works, maybe I could send you both a picture of the key. You can email me so I have your address to keep you up to date. My email is LindaNY999@aol.com. Please write in the subject, The Branch Bank, so I will open and read your mail. Otherwise you will get spammed. Good Luck, Linda
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have picked the locks of three of these now, with the heavy duty paper clips, once inside I made some measurements and have made a makeshift key with a Dremel and have some measurements, but they are far from great keys--I have used large fender washers, and canadian dimes (tougher than US equivalent), but would like a source to punch out a few of these. If you have a source, and can get me one too let me know and I'll send what I have--everyone I see has no key--probabnly thousand of them out there--all use the same key so far.
Meanwhile, in a pinch, use one of the chrome "handles" off those "binder clips" used to hold together stacks of paper (the smaller sizes work best), and hold it (gently) with vise grips--the key only rotates 1/4 turn and only goes one way. If it has not been opened in a few years, find 2 very thin keys, and put then through the bottom slot in the quarters and halves spots and pry (gently) up on the outer case and down on the base (it is easier with two people)--
I hope there is treasure in yours, I have only found a few coins in them, but everything was pre WWII--good luck-- if you find a real key let me know.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I just acquired a bank from the automatic recording safe co. Last year of patent is 9/29/13. It has the key and locking mechanism is in excellent condition. On top it says First state bank of Detroit. Any info on this item would be gratly appreciated.

Can't figure out how to pick it. I would like to be contacted if anyone finds out the answer to who to contact about these banks. The ones I have do pennies thru quarters. It even has a slot for paper currency. The patent is pending and there is no date on it but it must have been around 1953 when we got them.

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Could anyone with a key take a picture of it or scan it so that I could see the shape of it to see if I can get a key made, possibly with a ruler next to it to get the scaling down? It would be much appreciated. Please e-mail it to ChrisGerlach22@hotmail.com .

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hi Barry, I just got one of those banks from my mom. She says it's at least 65 yrs. old and no key. Maybe you can trace it and I could have one of my tool guys duplicate it. I would appreciate it. Thank you, Alan
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Just thought I'd jump in here to mention that I have one of these banks from the Rochester Loan & Banking Co. in Rochester, NH (no key, either). Mine lists two patent numbers, without dates, and says "other patents pending." Since it doesn't have a year listed, I can't tell how old it is. However...it has a slot for $5 gold pieces, so it's got to be an old timer. Anyone else have one with a gold piece slot?
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have one of these banks also.It was my father's from maybe the 1930's. He told me that when the bank closed in the depression they lost their savings. The bank says First National Bank of Englewood Chicago #6526. When I was a kid he made a key for it from memory with a hack saw and file. The key has a double blade bit not like the one drawn here. The bank is oval not round like one I saw on ebay. I looked up the patent number on the U.S. patent website. It said it was designed for kids to save money and the bank might hold the key to open it at time of deposit. Maybe that's why there are so few keys out there.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have one of these banks with the key. The bank looks like a book and is stamped on the front "How to Build a Fortune in Ten Years - Your own-not Another's" "Investors Syndicate Minneapolis, USA". It is a patent pending model. Any idea on value for this item? Thanks, any help would be appreciated!
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have recently recieved one of these banks from the Central Savings Bank of Baltimore, Maryland. I also have no key, but with a little luck was able to open it without one (but I also believe the lock no longer locks correctly). In my research I have found a website that shows a decent picture of a key next to an oval bank of this type. If anyone is interested drop me an email and I can send you the link.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hi: I have a Bank of St. george #331 automatic recording safe company safe. If you could send a trace of the key I would be very happy.
Regards John
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have a bank that was my mother's when she was a girl. It could actually have belonged to my aunt and then passed to my mother. It is from The Bank of Tehachapi in California and say patent pending on the bottom. My mother was born in 1919 and her sister was born around 1913. This bank is a silver metal and rectangular in shape. I believe that I have a key somewhere in the house---still on that quest. It would be interesting to see what they are worth although the sentimental value means more to me.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Please, send the link that you mentioned so I can get a picture of the key to this dang bank. I think that one of the posts was right in saying that the issuing bank kept the key and that is why there are so many without keys.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY If you still have the address to that web site, I would like it. I also have an oval bank without a key from the Federal Commercial and Savings Bank in Port Huron, MI.
Thanks!
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hello
I work for a bank that purchased The Farmers and Miners Trust Company in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They had issued the oval coin bank with the last patent date of Sept 23, 1913.
I have hade several people ask if we have keys-we don't. I have an elderly gentelmam with a bank now looking for a key. Saw your posting. If you could either e-mail a picture or tracing of the key or fax it to me at 814-NINE-THREE-EIGHT-1111- I will pass it on to him
Thank you
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have an oval safe as you described. No Key! Does the double blade key resemble the single key pictured in this forum except a double side?
My safe is from when I was a kid. Had it in the late 40's.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have one of these banks from the Chase Savings and Loan Association , 602 W. Girard Avenue. Must have gotten it before 1957. I would be greatful for a sketch of the key. I was able to open it with a paper clip, but am unable to relock it. Thanks. Jim Archer
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have this bank in the form of a suitcase and mickey mouse is on the front and travel stickers on the back approx. 4 " long. Pat pending on bottom. Mint condition but No key. Does anyone know anything about this? I would love to obtain a key. Thanks
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Barry,
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hello, 5/6/07
I have one of the banks that are being discussed here AND I have the key that came with it. It still works like a charm. You may need to put a hook inside the bottom hole and pull down gently when the key is rotated fully in the counter-clockwise position. That's what I had to do the first time... probably hadn't been opened in many years.
My key is very different from the one that someone drew / posted here. The part that goes down in the lock is about 7/8" long, it is 11/32" wide, 1/16" thick, has a cut out in and down the center from the tip about 5/16", and has three symmetrical notches cut out on each side.
For pictures, please e-mail me at cgc_here AT yahoo.com. Not sure how to post to this site: they want a URL (link) for the pictures? I'd like to post them on this site, but don't know how / where to upload...
The bank that I have is:
The Traveling Teller
Texarkana Federal Savings & Loan Association
Hope this info is useful,
Carl
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Carl: I have one of those "travelling teller" banks also. I had it as a boy and used it a lot. At one time, I had a key made, but have since lost it. I would like to give this to my son but would like a key made for it. The local locksmith couldn't help me.
My version is apparently the same as yours: double sided with the split down the middle. It is #1694, issued to the Manistee County Savings Bank in Manistee, MI. The last patent was issued Sept 23, 1913.
If you could send me a copy of the key, I think I can get one made or make it myself. thanks very much.
bob; mason, OH
Re: Info Needed: The Automatic Recording Safe Company I have one of your safes it came from Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank in Oakland, Ca. (on 13th and franklin), which does not exist any more. I would love more info on the history and value of the safe. Thank you very much.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Bob, 6/13/07
I'll be happy to provide you with pictures of the key. E-mail me at cgc_here AT yahoo.com.
Someone else (Greg) e-mailed me today and I e-mailed him the pictures.
Good luck,
Carl
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I just found my grandmother's automatic recording safe with the name Stockton Savings and Loan on it. It was full of coin's until I successfully made a key from a picture I received. I received the picture from a very nice seller on ebay who was selling a similar safe with the key. The bank was full of penny's, nickels and dimes with the earliest dating back to 1917!
I have the picture if anyone wants it, took me about an hour to make the key from an old caterpillar forklift key.
Greg
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Not only do I have the bank, but I have the original box and the key, which does have two pieces on the end to open. We purchased ours at an estate sale, it was in a box with alot of other items purchased for $1.00. Yes that's right one dollar. Ours was made for Protective Life insurance Company and is in mint condition. I hope you find a key for yours, they are really quite unique.

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Good morning, I have one of the traveling tellers. It is from Albany Savings Bank, in Albany, NY. When it was made, there was a main office at 20 N. Pearl St. and a branch office at 501 Western Ave. This information is printed on the top of the teller as well as an account number that is 487. The teller was made by The Automatic Recording Safe Co., PO Box 561, Millbrae, Calif. It says that the patent is pending. It has a double slot on the top for the key. Has anyone found a key that fits this type? Any idea when these were made? Thanks for your help, John
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hi - I have a small oval bank from them - it comes from Broadway Savings Bank in NY, NY - there are some coins in it and it has a hole on the bottom to put bills into - do you have a picture of the bank you have and the key so I can hopefully copy the key - Thank you

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY What a sad club to belong to! A bunch of grown adults who own a toy bank with pocket change in it and NO key.
My bank has the slot that would need a twin pronged key to open it. Any drawing or info on how to open that would be greatly appreciated.
"binder clips" work Thanks. The chrome "handle" from the "binder clip" technique works! Took me a couple minutes, got the two catches at top to finally release, and tugged a bit on the coin box due to some friction.
Hope folks can share the key design...it's two-pronged with outward tips.

Re: "binder clips" work Hi! It is so nice to find people with the same problem. I have a oval bank from Dry Dock savings. My dad handed it down to me without any key. I have tried the binder clip and I got the cylinder to turn but it still will not open! Any other advice?

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have an Automatic Safe Co. bank with key. The bank is a longer chrome oval with slots for 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c and bills. It states Patent Pending on the bottom. It's from First Federal Savings & Loan in Detroit.
The key is different fr0m that pictured below. It has the middle slot and 2 notches on each side. It inserts into the top and a half turn releases the bottom from the top and the bottom slips out.

I understand National was the predecessor to the American Recording Safe Company. Patent number dates it to 1905. And yep, I need a key to open it up and check out the few coins that are inside.
Any other information on these banks or the keys for these earlier versions would be appreciated.

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I know this is long after the fact, but we are trying to get information together about all the manufacturers of book banks. Did this company also make banks for the British market?
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Any luck with finding a key yet?
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Here's my observation on the "Traveling Teller" bank that uses the split key: the wire from the binder clip trick works perfectly, but be aware that the mechanism is spring loaded, and so the counter-clockwise turn (which is easily felt when you get it) must be held in that position as you pull on a hook inserted in the bottom. The metal of the bottom is REALLY soft, I'm afraid i did no good to the "mint condition" of my bank, as shiny fresh metal is now visible in the edge of the hole in the bottom.
I will say on the positive side, they made some amazingly artistic quarters in 1914!
Thanks immensely to the genius who figgered out the binder clip trick!!
scott
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have a bank "The Travelling Teller" from "The Automatic Recording Safe Co", patent pending. I inherited it from my mother. It uses a split key, but I do not have one. Could you please send a picture with dimensions? I have started carving on a piece of metal, but do not know where to cut the notches.
Thank you,
Robert

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Hi. I have a bank and a key but still can't get anything to open. The key turns a tiny bit and you can feel a spring tension against it but I can't see anything that would open on it. It looks pretty solid to me. My key looks nothing like the one pictured in the drawing but I'm sure this is the correct key for this bank. Thanks for any info you might have, George

Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have an Automatic Recording Safe Co. bank in the original box with the original key, the bank is in mint condition and read The Commercial National Bank 1091 High Point, NC and "A Dollar in the bank is worth two in the pocket". Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY I have one of these banks as well; it belonged to my grandmother. Mine Has the two-hole key at the top. When you turn the key and hold it in place, the coin holder is released. I have to stick my pinky finger in the hole at the bottom to pull the coin holder out of the bank. Does anyone know how to find out the value of this bank? Mine is South Brooklyn Savings Bank, last patent Spet, 23, 1913.
Re: Info Needed: THE AUTOMATIC RECORDING SAFE COMPANY Where do you see the patent number and date on these banks? Is it safe to assume that if mine says patent pending then it's one of the earliest one's made?

given away at financial institutions.

While using Google looking for Automatic Recording Safe Company, I came up with your request for info on the key for your bank. I am also looking for the same. I just spent the last hour trying to pick the lock with a paper clip bent into a hook but it wasn't stiff enough to open it but I found it started to open. Have you had any more luck? 7-16-04.

I also have an oval recording bank from The Hamilton National Bank of Tenn. If you still have the bank, did you get it open and what number do you have?
My bank belonged to my mother who was born 1922 in Chatt. so it must be from the early 1920's. It is #315 and the last patent date is Sept. 23, 1913.
You may contact me at haudette@hotmail.com.
Thanks!!
