Features and tricks to use with almost all search engines
(Google and Bing included)

Search in the singular!
If you search for "toys", you will not find "toy".
But if you search for "toy" you will find "toys" as well.

If you add quote marks around the words "cast iron banks", the engine will search for the exact phrase, whereas without the quote marks, it will return any/all instances of the words and in any order.

All searches are case insensitive; it does not matter if you use capitol letters or small letters. And the engine is also accent insensitive. Searching for "Fur" will match the lowercase "fur", uppercase "FUR", and German "für".

The most relevant content will appear at the top of the list. The "hits" will be highlighted and will indicate the actual reference on that page.

To make sure that a specific word is always included in your search topic, place the plus (+) symbol before the key word in the search box.

To make sure that a specific word is always excluded from your search topic, place a minus (-) sign  before the keyword in the search box.

Expand your search using a wildcard  *
By typing an * at the end of a keyword, you can search for the word with multiple endings.
Example: wish*, to find wish, wishes, wishful, wishbone, and wishy-washy.

You can search for more than just simple text! Here are some of the other ways you can force a specific search with almost all of the search engines:

In the engine text bar, type the following:

link:address    Finds pages that link to the specified address, or a substring of it.
Use   link:   to find all pages linking to Microsoft sites.
Note: this feature is not implemented on all search engines.

text:text    Finds pages that contain the specified text in any part of the page other than an image tag, link, or URL. The search    text: cow9    would find all pages with the term   cow9   in them.

title:text   Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title  (which appears in the title bar of most browsers). The search   title: Elvis  would find pages with  Elvis  in the title.

url:text   Finds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL. Use  url: altavista   to find all pages that have the word  altavista  in the host name, path, or filename (the complete URL, in other words).

text   Example:   bank site:    That format will send a search engine to the url you have chosen, and locate the item you are searching for at that url.

(This is handy for item searches at places like Sears, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. It allows you to search without having to dig through their entire website.)

I hope that info helped?
